Leaving a Lasting Legacy – Part 1

By:  Donna Martin

When the word “legacy” comes to mind many people envision a vast amount of money left to them by a deceased relative.  Did you know that 70% of rich families lose their wealth by the second generation?  This surprising finding was published in an article for Money Magazine written by Chris Taylor on June 17, 2015. The main reason for this seemed to be that the wealthy family did not talk with their offspring about money and how to use it.  Thus, the inheritance was often squandered and misused until 70% of it was lost by the second generation and 90% was lost by the third generation.  How sad that just some time spent interacting with the heirs could have saved the family fortune.

In Matthew 6: 19-21, Jesus teaches his followers that a legacy is much more than money.  He told them, “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.  But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.  For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

Because of our love for God and our family, as Christians we have a responsibility to leave a legacy to our children that is much more valuable than earthly treasure. It is a legacy of loving God and teaching our children to live a life of faith and trust in God.   A legacy built on faith will last for generations to come.

If you have not already, begin today to work toward leaving a lasting legacy for your family.  Exodus 20:5-6 gives us a promise that it will be worth the effort.

“I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.”  (NIV)
