Reflecting on the Son

By:  Donna Martin

One of our summer pleasures is spending time with our children and grandchildren.  We like to have “Nana and Poppy Camp” when we spend special moments just hanging out with our grandchildren.  We bake, hike, swim, read books, play hide and seek, enjoy board games, art activities, and movies together.  These times are full of lots of laughter and energy.  When it is time for our sweet grandchildren to head back home, Mike and I are usually exhausted, but the apartment seems a little too quiet.  As I clean up the toys, toss the sheets in the laundry, and put up the futons that “transform into beds” (a quote from our four-year-old grandson) my mind replays all of the good memories that we made together.  My heart is always a little heavy.  I suddenly miss all of the activity and I think about how I cherish these special moments with my children and grandchildren.

As I was pondering all of this I was reminded of how much God loves for His children to spend time with Him.  Just as we love for our children and grandchildren to spend time with us – God must feel the same way when we take time out of our regular schedule and give him our time, attention and adoration.  We love for our children and grandchildren to love us and to listen to us and to talk to us.  We want them to teach them about life, we want them to be successful; we want them to love God.

Our heavenly Father loves us even more than we love our own children and grandchildren.  We raise our children to leave us; however, God never leaves us.  We were created to have a relationship with God, to love Him and worship Him.  Our worship is not limited to a time or a place.  Worship should not end when we leave church.  Worshipping God can be a part of our everyday life.  Colossians 3:15-17 tells us to “Let the peace of Christ rule in your heats, since as members of one body you were called to peace.  And be thankful.  Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs and with gratitude in your hearts. And whatever you do whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”

As the summer ends and the school year begins things may begin to get hectic in your home.  Busy schedules may make it difficult to find even five minutes to stop for a quiet time alone with God.  But you can bring “the peace of God” into your home by living each day with an attitude of thankfulness, worship and praise.  Ask God to help you be aware of His presence in your life each day.  “Pray continually” in your mind.  Do everything “in the name of the Lord Jesus.”  Let your love of God shine through to your family and everyone around you.  Be a light in this dark world.
